Interesting Wesley observation:

I'm watching Lineage for the first time in awhile and I just noticed that once Wesley's father turned up Wesley's voice reverted to Early!Wes mode. Nervous and overly self-assure (in an obvious attempt to veil his insecurities) and clipped. Listen to it without looking at the screen and you'll swear you're watching Season 1.

And I can't stop going, "Awwwwwwwww, poor woobie!" over and over, what with Angel chastising Wes, Wes feeling all guilty for Fred getting hurt, Daddy Wyndam-Pryce making him feel like an incompetent child and reminding him and everyone else of his past failures over and over...

"Awwwwwwwwww, poor woobie!"

See? But I also love that Wes can return to being strong and bad ass, once he realizes that something's up, but the scene of him shooting Roger still makes my heart break for Wes.

"Awwwwww..."

After this I really need to go to bed.

I think it was [livejournal.com profile] eloise_bright who wrote a nice little meta on how Wesley, in "Lineage," displays all his major character phases in one episode.

You know, that first-sentence meme made me find a ramble I'd made after rewatching Lineage. It's here, if you're up for the angst.

Oh man, now I really need to go to bed. Might give me nightmares. That little essay that you did in November was so on the mark, I think that Joss couldn't do any better. And we wonder why lots of critics keep telling people that Angel was one of the best shows on TV and that it was a travesty that it was cancelled. And that's Wesley's character was "the" most complex character ever created for television. Your essay shows that in spades. I so miss the show now after reading that. Because we all know that Wesley wasn't supposed to die at the end of season five (Alexis even says it himself that the WB killed Wesley). Now I'm depressed! At least I have you guys to talk with about this. Read more fics. That'll put me in a better mood.

My way of undepressing after that was to start writing S1 Wes. :-) I recommend it!

OMG, it's late. One more post before I hit the hay. You didn't notice him reverting? It's kinda scary what a good actor he is, because he went through all the permutations of Wesley in one episode. It wasn't quite like "Spin the Bottle", which I'm sure you've seen a bazillion times.

I just felt so damn sorry for him in this episode. I'm not sure why no one wanted to kick Roger's ass for him. I'm sure Cordy would have if she'd been there.

Oh yes, I noticed. In fact, this was the ep that flung me headlong into Wes fandom, because there was such richness to him that I had to have more.

I think everyone was a little afraid of Wes' dad, knowing at least a little about the family history. They were all "not going there, eep!"

I noticed his actions reverting, but I hadn't really noticed that about the timbre of his voice changing back. That's what caught my attention this time around.

This was the episode that really make me sit up and take notice of Wesley when I first saw it. I'd liked him before, but I'd been AllAboutSpike at the time. After seeing Lineage I really wanted to know more about Wes and started paying more attention to his character.

These days I'm, "Spike who?" ;-)

And this is why we all have to watch each episode a million times. Sometimes I literally will hit myself upside the head when I have watched a particular episode and then see something I never saw nor heard before. What's so funny is I really didn't take notice of Spike until the sixth season of Buffy. Then I started liking him more and more. He and Wes are a lot alike in certain respects.

I remember being awed that Alexis could pull that off. The voice, the mannerisms, everything screamed S1. He is simply amazing! I thought it was such a shame that they didn't follow up on that storyline, prefering to dump him into the 'whoa, I've lost my precious Fred' hole for the rest of the season. I think having just killed what you thought was your father deserves more than 2 min at the end of the ep, and would have been plenty of reason to send him around the bend sooner.

Can't wait to go back and read those essays mentioned in comments, when I'm not rushing to get to work. When are those S5 dvds coming out, damn it! I want Lineage. I want outtakes!

That's why what happened to Wesley after he killed cyborgfather is so ficcable. We all wondered what in hell was he up to after he went away for that time (OK, we all know what he was doing in real life). There's so many possibilities.

Yeah, and I want outtakes, especially of "Smile Time".
