Angel/Wesley ficlet

cheesycatsA little Angel/Wesley ficlet. AtS Season 1. Angel and Cordy have a little talk about a certain ex-Rogue Demon Hunter's feelings. PG-13 for one naughty word.
“It’s… wow. Wesley, I don’t know what to say. You didn’t have to do this, you know.” Angel stroked the warm wooden finish of the weapons case in amazement. It was simple and worn, yet obviously well-made. Wesley had done an excellent job of cleaning and polishing so that it was beautiful even in its slightly distressed state.
Wesley shrugged. “Just a trifle. Something I found recently in a dusty little shop when I was looking for a new dagger. It cleaned up quite well, and I thought it would look nice in your office. It does look nice, um, don’t you think?” he looked at Angel hopefully, still unsure if his gift had pleased him.
“Yeah, it does.” Angel smiled sincerely. “Thanks.”
Wesley beamed, secure in the knowledge that his gift was appreciated. “Good! Good. I’ll… I’ll get to work researching that Cafnos demon, shall I?”
Angel nodded. “Sure. We’ll need to locate its lair before it tries to mate again.”
“Right. I think I know where I can find a few volumes that might help. I’ll be back as quickly as I can.” Wesley smiled bashfully and slipped out of Angel’s office.
Angel was still admiring the case when Cordelia sidled up next to him. “Pretty box.”
“Wesley gave it to me. Nice, isn’t it?”
“Uh-huh.” Cordelia said knowingly.
“What?” Angel asked suspiciously.
“Oh, nothing.”
“That wasn’t an ordinary uh-huh. That uh-huh means something.”
Cordelia lifted an eyebrow. “And you call yourself a detective.”
“Cordelia, I don’t have time for this. Would you please tell me what I’m supposedly not detecting so we can get on with our work here?”
“It’s Wesley.”
“What about Wesley?”
“Well, at first I thought he was being all dorky and groveling and kissing up to the boss when he first came here.”
“Yeah?”
“Then I realized that wasn’t it. Okay, he really was being dorky, and that’s just Wesley being Wesley, but…”
“What?” Angel asked, exasperated.
Cordelia sighed. “The kissing part? I think he might really be serious about that.”
Angel stared blankly at Cordelia as her words sunk in. “What? No. Wesley doesn’t want… kissing? Me? But he never… Wesley--” Angel swallowed nervously, “--likes me?”
“It’s more than just like. The fancy bottle of whiskey, then that boring old book you wanted so badly, now the shiny box to hold all your pointy things; not to mention the way he reverts into a goofy love-struck teenager whenever he’s within ten feet of you. Face facts Angel, the man has a major crush on you. Don’t forget, I was once the object of his affection, so I know the Wesley Wyndam-Pryce mating dance when I see it.” Cordelia said assuredly.
Angel sat down abruptly in his desk chair and processed this information, brow furrowed.
Cordelia watched him for a long moment. “Either you’re going to have to tell me what you’re thinking or you’re going to have to learn more than one facial expression.”
Angel grinned with amusement. “Mating dance?”
“Whatever. Look, I know you’re a little retarded when it comes to the whole human emotions thing, but whatever you do, don’t hurt his feelings, okay? He really does care about you.”
“No, I wouldn’t do that. I just never thought Wes would feel that way about me.” Angel said as he tried to suppress a nervous giggle.
Cordelia was not amused. “So help me mister, if you’re going to laugh at Wesley I’m getting that stake out of my desk drawer right now because… oh my God!” Cordelia gasped as she realized what else that awkward giggle might mean. “Angel, do you feel the same way about him?”
Angel suddenly looked shy and stared at the floor. “Yeah, I guess I do. I mean, I hadn’t considered it seriously because I… you know I can’t get involved with anyone and Wes is my employee and… and what the hell am I doing even considering this? Cordelia, I can’t get involved with anyone! It’s impossible.”
“You mean the curse?”
“Of course I mean the curse. What if, you know, he and I got around to, um,”
“Fucking?”
“Cordelia!”
“Oh, please!” Cordelia rolled her eyes.
“Didn’t we agree just the other day that sex is bad?”
“I don’t think Wes has plans to impregnate you with his demon seed. And now I’m going to be scarred for life from that mental image.” Cordelia shuddered.
“Me and Wes, it can’t happen.” Angel insisted. “I can’t take a chance on turning into Angelus again. It’s too risky.”
“This perfect happiness curse, I don’t think it’s really about sex.” Cordelia said thoughtfully. “It’s about who you’re with and how you feel about them.”
Angel gently caressed the smooth wood of the weapons case. “Yeah. I know. That’s what worries me.”

A great mix of fluff and angst, the cuteness of Angel *and* Wes having a crush, but also the slight bitterness of the slight catch being that if it *could* be more than a crush... then they're really in trouble. *sniffle* BRavo!
